Water quality & filtration.
What is hard water, and why is it a problem for skin and hair?
Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals (above 7 gpg per USGS standards). These minerals bond to hair through chelation — forming an invisible coating that prevents moisture absorption and reduces tensile strength by up to 30% (International Journal of Trichology, 2016). On skin, deposits interfere with cleanser effectiveness. Over 85% of US homes have hard water.
What contaminants does the Second Shower filter out?
Our Vitamin C core neutralizes 99.9% of free chlorine and chloramines. The PP sediment mesh (certified to NSF/ANSI 42 standards) captures particles down to 5 microns — rust, pipe scale, and heavy metal fragments. We're transparent about limits: we don't claim to filter fluoride, dissolved lead, or pharmaceuticals. For those, a dedicated under-sink RO system is appropriate.
Will switching to a filtered shower help my skin conditions?
The American Academy of Dermatology acknowledges that chlorinated water exacerbates eczema and contact dermatitis. In our 22-participant study, 88% reported clearer skin and 95% felt less dryness within 2 weeks. However, results vary by individual and water quality. We recommend giving it 4-6 weeks for your skin barrier to fully recover.
How does a Vitamin C filter work?
Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) reacts with free chlorine through a redox reaction — converting it to harmless chloride ions. Unlike carbon and KDF filters that physically absorb contaminants (and saturate over time), Vitamin C neutralizes chlorine chemically. The reaction is instant, temperature-independent, and maintains 99.9% effectiveness from Day 1 to Day 60.
How is the Second Shower different from other filtered showerheads?
Three things: (1) Vitamin C chemistry instead of carbon/KDF — consistent performance that never degrades. (2) PP sediment filter certified to NSF/ANSI 42 standards — independently verified, not self-reported. (3) Built-in truth window — you can see captured contaminants in real time. No other brand offers all three. Read the full technology comparison.
Can a shower filter help with eczema or dermatitis?
Chlorine is a known eczema trigger. The American Academy of Dermatology acknowledges that chlorinated water can worsen eczema and contact dermatitis by breaking down the skin's natural moisture barrier. Removing chlorine eliminates one of the most common environmental triggers.
That said, eczema has multiple causes — genetics, allergens, stress, diet — and a shower filter addresses only the water component. Many customers with eczema report significant improvement, but we don't claim it's a cure. If you have severe eczema, consult your dermatologist and consider a shower filter as part of a broader approach, not a replacement for medical treatment.
Is a shower filter good for sensitive or dry skin?
Yes. Chlorinated water strips the natural oils that retain moisture in your skin, increasing water loss by 20-35% (Journal of Dermatological Science, 2019). This is the mechanism behind post-shower tightness and flaking. By removing chlorine, your skin retains its natural moisture. In our testing, 95% of users reported less dry skin within two weeks. Note: there's a brief adjustment period (a few days to two weeks) as your skin adapts to chlorine-free water — this is normal.
Product & usage.
How do I install the Second Shower?
Tool-free in about 60 seconds. Unscrew your existing showerhead, attach the Second Shower filter, screw your showerhead back on. Everything you need comes in the box — including plumber's tape for a leak-free seal. Fits 99% of US showers (standard 1/2" NPT threads). See the full installation guide.
When should I replace the filter?
Every 1-3 months depending on your water quality. Two signs it's time: (1) the Vitamin C powder in the lower chamber is depleted (looks clear instead of fine white powder), or (2) you notice reduced water pressure. Hard water areas (NYC, older buildings): ~1 month. Average areas: ~2 months. Clean water areas: 3+ months.
My filter turned brown — is that normal?
Yes, completely normal. The brown/amber color is microsediment, rust, and heavy metals captured by the micron filtration. This is proof the filter is working — that color is what used to end up on your skin and hair. As the filter collects particles, micron gaps tighten and filtration quality actually improves.
Showerhead vs Showerhand — which should I get?
Showerhand ($89): Handheld with hose. Best for flexibility, rinsing children/pets, easier control. Has infuser chamber for aromatherapy. 128 micro-jets.
Showerhead ($99): Wall-mount, fixed position. Best for hands-free use, permanent install, rainfall-style experience. 176 micro-jets. No infuser chamber.
Both use the same filtration technology and deliver 99.9% chlorine removal.
My water pressure dropped — what should I do?
This usually means the filter needs replacing. Check the truth window — if it's dark brown, the filter is full. Also: (1) Make sure you're using the original Second Shower hose, not a third-party one (different rubber packing causes loss). (2) Ensure the filter is seated correctly. (3) Try removing the flow regulator (small blue disc between hose and handle). (4) Run water for 30 seconds to clear debris.
My skin feels drier after switching — is that normal?
Yes — this is a normal adjustment period of several days to 2 weeks. Chlorinated water leaves a slippery residue on skin. When chlorine is removed, skin can temporarily feel tighter. Most customers find their skin feels calmer and more balanced after 2 weeks. Tip: avoid very hot water and apply a light moisturizer during the transition.
