Quick Answer

A filtered shower head is a good gift for someone who showers every day and has said, out loud, that their skin feels tight or their hair feels rough after. It replaces something they already use, it installs by hand in about a minute, and they keep using it long after the wrapping paper is gone. It is the wrong gift for someone whose real complaint is white scale on the glass: that is hardness, and it takes a water softener.

  • For most people: the Second Showerhand ($89), a handheld that suits renters, long hair and anyone who rinses the tub.
  • For someone who prefers a fixed head: the Second Showerhead ($99).
  • Make it a set: add a filter pack ($29 for three Showerhand filters, $39 for two Showerhead filters) so the first swaps are covered.

Both use a Vitamin C core that reduced free chlorine and chloramine by 99.9% in independent lab testing, held through Day 1-60 on the Showerhead and Day 1-30 on the Showerhand in our own testing, behind an NSF/ANSI 42* certified sediment pre-filter.

Is a filtered shower head a good gift?

The gifts people keep using are the ones that replace something they already do every day. A shower is one of those things. A filtered shower head changes the water they stand in, not their routine, so there is nothing new to remember.

What it actually changes. US utilities add a disinfectant to tap water, chlorine or chloramine, to keep it safe in the pipes. In a hot shower that disinfectant meets skin and hair. Chlorine is an oxidizer: it reacts with the oils that keep skin from drying out and with the proteins in hair. A filter that removes it takes one cause of that tight, squeaky feeling out of the shower. In a 22-person study of our shower, 95% of the people who used it for two weeks said their skin felt less tight after showering.

Why it lands as a gift. Plenty of people would not buy one for themselves. They have heard of shower filters, they mean to look into it, and it never quite happens. That gap is what makes it a thoughtful present rather than a random gadget: you noticed the thing they keep mentioning and you solved it.

When it is the wrong gift. Be honest with yourself about the complaint. If it is white crust on the shower door, spots on the faucet or scale in the kettle, the cause is calcium and magnesium, and no shower filter removes those at shower flow. Our filter does not soften water, and we will not pretend it does. If they already have a whole-house filtration system that removes chlorine, a shower filter adds little.

Who it suits, and which one to give

The person What they say Give Why
The skincare person "My skin feels tight the second I get out." Second Showerhand Removes chlorine and chloramine before they reach the face and body; a handheld rinses face and hair at close range.
Long or color-treated hair "My color fades so fast." Second Showerhand Chlorine oxidizes hair; a handheld lets them rinse length and ends directly.
The renter "I can't change anything in this apartment." Second Showerhand No tools, no permanent plumbing changes; it comes off in a minute when they move.
Just moved to a new city "The water here feels different." Second Showerhead or Showerhand Many US cities use chloramine; both filters reduce chlorine and chloramine.
Likes a clean, fixed look "I don't want a hose in my shower." Second Showerhead Wall-mount, 176 micro-jets, the longer filter schedule (every 60 days).
Complains about scale "There's white stuff on everything." A water softener, not a shower filter Hardness is minerals; a shower filter does not remove them.

If you are not sure, give the Showerhand. A handheld does everything a fixed head does, plus the rinsing jobs a fixed head cannot reach.

What to give: the device, the filters, the finishing touch

A good gift does not leave the person with a chore in four weeks. Pair the device with its filters, and it runs for months without them having to think about it.

Gift What is in it Price (one-time) How long it runs
Showerhand on its own Handheld, hose, an infuser, one filter installed $89 About a month at our recommended swap
Showerhand + filter 3-pack The above plus three replacement filters $118 About four months at one filter every 30 days
Showerhead on its own Wall-mount head, one filter installed $99 About two months at our recommended swap
Showerhead + filter 2-pack The above plus two replacement filters $138 About six months at one filter every 60 days

The finishing touch. For a Showerhand, add more Infusers ($19), aroma tablets for the handheld that scent the shower. They work only with the Second Showerhand, not the Showerhead. It is the small, unexpected part of the gift.

About subscriptions. With a filter subscription the Showerhand is $69 and the Showerhead $79, and refills ship free every cycle. For a gift, the device plus a filter pack is the simple route, and they can start their own subscription later ($27 for a Showerhand 3-pack, $36 for a Showerhead 2-pack).

The takeaway: give the device with its filters. A filter pack is what turns a nice gift into one that is still working at the end of winter.

Five checks before you buy

  1. The shower arm. Both install by hand, without tools, in about a minute. The Showerhead fits the standard 1/2-inch connection most US shower arms use. If their shower has no arm (a head set flush into the wall or ceiling), check before you buy.
  2. Renting. Fine. Nothing is permanent: they unscrew the old head, keep it in a drawer and put it back when they move out.
  3. Their state. Both models come in a 1.8 GPM version for states with stricter flow limits, such as California: water-efficient, CEC certified and DOE compliant.
  4. Color. Four finishes each. Showerhand: Pure Silver, Matte Black, Forest Green, Blossom Pink. Showerhead: Matte Black, Pure Silver, Black Pink, White Green. If you are guessing, Matte Black and Pure Silver go with most bathrooms.
  5. Timing and returns. We ship within the US only. Standard shipping takes 3-4 business days and is free on orders of $40 or more; orders placed before 2 PM ET leave the same business day, weekend orders ship Monday. Returns and exchanges are open for 30 days from delivery, and an exchange (a different color, say) costs no extra shipping.

Why this gift gets used

A gift that sits in a cupboard is a gift that failed. Three things keep this one in use.

It works on the water they already have. The filter has two stages. A micron PP sediment pre-filter, the NSF/ANSI 42* certified part, catches rust and grit. Behind it, a Vitamin C core neutralizes chlorine and chloramine on contact, which matters at shower flow, where water spends only a moment in the filter. In independent lab testing it reduced both by 99.9%, held through the peak window in our own testing: Day 1-30 on the Showerhand, Day 1-60 on the Showerhead.

It does not cost them their pressure. The Showerhead has 176 micro-jets and the Showerhand 128, with no measurable pressure loss at 40-80 PSI. Nobody keeps a gift that makes their shower weaker.

It is easy. In the same 22-person study, people rated the install 4.9 out of 5. A clear window on the filter chamber lets them see the filter they are showering through, and the schedule is simple: a new filter every 30 days on the Showerhand and every 60 days on the Showerhead, because the Vitamin C oxidizes as it works, or sooner if the filter looks deep brown or black or the pressure drops noticeably. The color of the filter is not a gauge of how much life is left.

FAQ

Is a filtered shower head a good gift?

Yes, for someone who showers daily and mentions dry-feeling skin or rough hair after. It replaces something they already use and installs by hand in about a minute. It is not the right gift if their complaint is white scale from hard water; that needs a water softener.

Should I give the Showerhand or the Showerhead?

Give the Second Showerhand if you are unsure: it suits renters, long hair and rinsing the tub. Give the Second Showerhead to someone who prefers a fixed head without a hose. Both use the same kind of Vitamin C filter.

Can they install it themselves?

Yes. Both install by hand without tools in about a minute, with no permanent plumbing changes, so they work in rentals and come off when the person moves.

Can I give a filter subscription?

The simple route is the device with a filter pack ($29 for three Showerhand filters, $39 for two Showerhead filters); they can start their own subscription later.

What if the color is wrong?

Exchanges are open for 30 days from delivery and cost no extra shipping. Matte Black and Pure Silver are the safe choices if you are guessing.
